Euthanasia/Quality of Life

What to Expect

Dr. Sophie Leone and Holly will come to your house and provide a compassionate service, allowing your pet to pass peacefully. This can happen in the home, outside, or anywhere else where your pet feels comfortable. We provide various types of treats for the pet to enjoy if they are feeling up to eating.

The euthanasia includes all the medications to ensure your pet passes comfortably and with dignity. First, there is a sedative injection, followed by additional sedative medications and the final injection. Pets may have final breaths, movements or twitching, which is all of their energy being released.

Once Dr. Leone has verified the passing of your dear pet, mementos can be collected, which are included with the euthanasia. Hair clippings of favorite areas of the fur, ink nose prints on card stock, and air-dry terra-cotta clay paw prints are made, if the pet parent would like them.

  • Home Burial - This option is at no additional charge and is for owners who wish to have a home burial service or take their pet to a crematory or pet cemetery of their choosing. Burial should only be performed in accordance with local and state laws, and when applicable, with your landlord's authorization.

The injectables used for humane euthanasia are an environmental hazard that have been proven to linger in the body for years and leach into the surrounding soil. The injectables are toxic to wildlife, and birds and mammals feeding on remains may be killed. Euthanized animals must be properly disposed of by deep burial to prevent consumption of carcass material by scavenging wildlife. Should another animal die from ingesting euthanasia solution within the body of a deceased pet, the fine for the veterinarian can be as high as $500,000 depending on the type of animal (ex. endangered species).

Per the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, a burial site must be:

  • Outside 100-year flood plain

  • Minimum of 100 feet from waters, wells, sinkholes, and property lines (200 feet recommended)

  • Covered by at least two feet of soil within 48 hours

  • The bottom of the burial site should be at least two feet above bedrock, seasonal high water table, and highly permeable soils
